I’ve had lots of comments about my mum’s direct eyes on the cover of this book.
This photo is such a lesson for me. She only developed a direct gaze after she went blind. When she could see another person’s face, another person’s response to her, she didn’t have the self-esteem to hold eye contact.
I love this version of her. Steady, curious, unapologetically herself, less intimidated, less shy, less afraid of what anyone thinks of her.
When I think of her now, this is what I picture. And this is what I want for myself in those situations that intimidate me still.
Thanks so much to those of you who have sent your direct gaze in the form of comments and questions. I appreciate your minds and hearts more than I can say.
Please consider leaving a review on Amazon. It helps to keep the book alive and reach a few more people who might be served by it. It’s also a way to tell us all what matters to you.
And thanks again to the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario for their support in writing this one.
Here’s the book: Impossibly Close.
